the sight is a strange book for me
// spoilers for the sight + minor spoilers for the rest of PO3 and mentions of ableism
been re-reading the sight lately (mainly cus i miss hollyleaf) and i find the arc that they set jaykit up for us very strange and ableist.
throughout the first few chapters (when the 3 are still kittens) we see a lot of cats (leafpool, squirrelflight and other clanmates) say that jaykit can ‘never be a normal apprentice’. others go as far to question if he should move to the elders den simply because he is blind.
jaykit, hollykit and lionkit all believe that jaykit can and will become a warrior. these first few chapters feel as if they are setting up a character arc for jaykit, where he will train to become a warrior and face hardships along the way as well as ableism from the cats around him (similar to brightheart’s arc in TPB).
as everyone knows, jaykit is essentially forced to give up his training as a warrior and become a medicine cat, something that he clearly doesnt want and is upset about.
this is ableist, as it gives the reader hope that we will see jaykit grow up and become the first blind warrior in all of the clans and that we will see him change how the clans view disabled cats in general. instead, the books puts him in the medicine den as being a warrior is ‘too hard for him’.
the erin’s trash what could have been an interesting character arc in favour of putting another disabled cat in the medicine den :/
